En la época de posguerra, el compositor estadounidense John Cage empezó a colaborar con el pianista David Tudor y el coreógrafo y bailarín Merce Cunningham para crear proyectos de performance, y en este año, en el Black Mountain College de Carolina del Norte, se representó lo que se denominó “Theater Event”.
En su “declaración autobiográfica” en 1990, Cage describió el acontecimiento: “actividades disparatadas…”
